We Are a Community Built on Connection

Everything we do starts with relationships.

A ride to an appointment, a friendly visit, a quick repair, a shared cup of coffee - these moments build trust and strengthen the ties that make our neighborhood feel like home. Villagers and Volunteers get to know each other, share stories, and form friendships that enrich everyone involved.

This neighbor‑to‑neighbor connection is the heart of the Village model.

A Place to Belong

RiverWest Villagers aren’t just recipients of support. They’re active contributors to the life of the community. They bring wisdom, humor, creativity, and lived experience. They host gatherings, share skills, offer ideas, and help shape the welcoming culture that defines RiverWest Village.

Everyone has something to offer here.

Our Roots in a National Movement

RiverWest Village is part of a growing, nationwide effort to reimagine what it means to age in community. The Village Movement began more than twenty years ago when neighbors in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood created a new model for supporting older adults. One that's built on connection, practical help, and the power of community.

Their idea inspired communities across the country to build their own Villages shaped by local needs and local strengths. Today, hundreds of Villages operate nationwide, each unique but united by the same belief: Neighbors supporting neighbors makes aging stronger, safer, and more joyful.

How RiverWest Village Joined the Story

Our Village grew out of that same spirit. Local residents saw the challenges older adults were facing like transportation gaps, social isolation, difficulty finding trustworthy help, and came together to create a community‑driven solution. RiverWest Village reflects the values of Southwest Portland: independence, connection, generosity, and mutual care.

We’re proud to be part of this larger movement while building something distinctly our own.

 What Makes Us Different

  • Personal: Built on real relationships, where neighbors know one another and create a sense of belonging going beyond a service transaction.
  • Local: Shaped entirely by the needs, strengths, and character of our own Southwest Portland community — created by neighbors, for neighbors.
  • Flexible: Designed to evolve as Villagers’ lives and needs change, allowing us to add services, adjust support, and respond to new challenges as they arise.
  • Inclusive: Welcoming people from all backgrounds and experiences, and committed
to creating a community where every person feels seen, valued, and supported.
  • Sustainable: Powered by volunteers, partnerships, and community generosity, creating a resilient model that strengthens the neighborhood and endures over time.

We’re here to make aging in place not only possible, but joyful.
